Benefits of Swedish Massage

Why are Swedish Massages so good?

Whether you are a newbie to massage or a massage veteran, you can be sure to be pleased by a Swedish massage. This is a full body oil massage aimed at relaxing the entire body, which is guaranteed to leave you feeling deeply relaxed. It is the most commonly used form of massage in the west and is often the go-to option for any beginner looking to have their first massage. Not only is it the most common treatment but it is also offers a variety of health benefits. Sounds good? Read more below to find out what to expect during the massage.

So what it is a Swedish massage?

Swedish massage aims to relax the entire body, by using a variety of techniques to manipulate the soft tissue of different muscle groups around the body, releasing any built-up tension in the muscles. This kind of massage is the perfect antidote for if you have general aches and pains in your back, for example. As everyone is different, the massage therapist will ask you what kind of pressure you prefer and they can apply a light or medium pressure to your body, depending on your preference. The therapist will also ask if there are any particular areas on which you would like the massage to be targeted e.g. you might have tight shoulders or a stiff neck, thereby the therapist can spend a bit longer on these areas during the massage.

During a Swedish massage, the therapist will work on one area of the body before moving onto the next. To begin with, the therapist will apply massage oil to lubricate the skin using gentle strokes and will then follow this up with a variety of firmer massage strokes to ease and release tension in the muscles.

Once one side of the body is done, you will roll over, allowing the therapist to massage the other side of your body. Large towels are used during the massage to keep you well covered. Using a technique known as draping, the therapist will adjust the towel to reveal only the body part which is to be massaged next.

Aside from the relaxing feel, I suppose you’re thinking, so what are the benefits?

You might be quite surprised to know that Swedish massage has been proven to help provide a vast array of benefits for the body, such as;

  • Reducing depression, stress and fatigue
  • Encouraging improved sleep quality and helping to reduce insomnia
  • Providing an improved sense of wellbeing
  • An overall relaxed and revitalized feeling

Sounds great doesn’t it!?

Throughout the massage process it is always recommended that you communicate with your therapist in order for you to receive a massage that is tailored to your needs.
