What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a safe and effective hands-on therapy which involves applying gentle sustained pressure to myofascial restrictions in the connective tissue in order to treat pain, tension, and restore movement and flexibility. People come for myofascial release to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as back, hip, shoulder or neck pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, TMJ issues and scars from surgery.

The focus is on removing restriction and restoring balance to the whole body, rather than concentrating solely on an area of pain. ‘Myo’ refers to muscles, and the ‘fascia’ is the connective tissue which surrounds and connects to muscles, tendons, bones and all the organs in the body. The fascial system provides cushioning and support, providing structure and allowing movement. Like muscle, fascia can become injured and can cause lines of tension and dysfunction, which can lead to pain signals being sent to the brain.

What can I expect in a treatment?

Unlike traditional massage, oil or lotion is not often used for myofascial release. Instead, the therapist will make both visual and hands-on assessments of the tissue in order to locate areas of restriction and treat accordingly. A postural assessment will take place, as well as a health history. A variety of techniques may be used, such as sinking into the fascia and holding it on a stretch in order to ease restriction. Gentle traction of the arms and legs may be used to create stretch through the lines of fascia in the body.

How many sessions should I have?

Myofascial release is best received as a series of regular treatments initially, in order to facilitate change and promote healthy movement. Some clients may find this is enough for them, and others may return for maintenance sessions.
