What is Indian Head Massage?

Categories: Indian Head Massage
Tags: Relaxation, Back Pain, Insomnia, Anxiety, Headaches

Indian head massage originated in India and it is based on the ayurvedic system of healing. It is a wonderfully relaxing, stress-busting, massage treatment, especially good at targeting and reducing the tension we carry around our head, neck, shoulders and upper back. This kind of upper body muscle tension could be the cause of your migraines, tension headaches or stiff neck.

What will a Indian head massage treatment involve?

Indian head massage combines both ancient techniques from India, alongside Swedish massage techniques. The treatment normally uses oil and involves massage and gentle stretching techniques to the head, upper back, shoulders and arms and finishes with a relaxing face massage.

The massage can be performed lying on a massage table or in a massage chair - although from our experience, clients find it most relaxing to lie down for the treatment.

What are the benefits of an Indian head massage?

Indian head massage can have some great benefits for both your body and mind! Read on to learn more .....

Stress Reduction and Anxiety

The massage is extremely effective for treating stress because it works on the areas of the body where we all carry our stress – the upper back, neck, shoulders and head. Having your head massaged is an extremely relaxing experience. Therefore the treatment can also help to improve your overall sense of wellbeing, which in turn may also help to lower raised blood pressure and relieve anxiety - both potential side effects of stress.

Better Sleep

The relaxing affect of Indian head massage can have a positive effect on your sleep, by encouraging deeper, more restful sleep and helping to reduce insomnia.

Reduction in back/neck pain

The massage and stretching techniques used during an Indian head massage help to reduce muscular stiffness. Relaxing the muscles in the neck, shoulders, head and back and alleviating tension in these areas, helps to reduce pain and improves joint mobility.

Reduces Headaches/Migraines

When there is built-up tension in the scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back it can often lead to headaches/migraines. Similarly, when you are stressed out this can result in tension headaches. Indian head massage targets these exact areas, helping to reduce the muscle tension that may be causing the headaches, whilst the relaxing affects of the massage will help to alleviate a tension headache.
